Not all Ryman residents can claim viral internet sensation status – but Patrick Hogan Retirement Village’s Doug Lineham sure can!

It was during the live televised name reveal for Ryman Healthcare’s new Cambridge village on TVNZ’s Breakfast that presenter Matty McClean happened upon Doug.

The resulting hilarious sequence of dry, but complimentary-to-Ryman, one-liners left the audience calling for Doug to have his own show. One fan even touted him as the next PM!

What viewers didn’t know, however, was that behind the droll exterior, Doug was dealing with the loss of his beloved wife Jan.

Its time to beautify the old St John’s site on the Corner of Karori Road and Campbell Street, to create a vibrant and engaging community space for all to enjoy.

Boston Projects and Foxtail Events are hosting a Community Planting Day on Saturday, 27 January from 10am – 2pm, and the whole of Karori is invited to attend and participate in this fun day out.

Bring your gumboots, trowels, spades, forks and a bunch of energy and enthusiasm to help make our town centre fantastic! A bottle or water, sunhat and sunscreen is super important too!

This grass roots initiative is fully reliant on the support of the Karori community and there are a number of ways that you can contribute to this project. For example, we need more plants (i.e native grasses and bushes, succulents flowering plants, wildflowers, bulbs, herbs, or edible plants). Anything will be considered.

We are also looking for a local talented artist to create a mural and someone to regularly help keep the section tidy with some strimming of the grass.

If you are able to volunteer your time with either of these, then please get in touch with Boston Projects at hello@bostonprojects.co.nz

We look forward to seeing you there!

If your going away over the holidays myself and my girlfriend Karolina are both big animal fans and can help you out while you’re enjoying your time away! We are available for all around Christmas and have done over 6 other pet feeding jobs so you can trust we will get what your pets require done. Rates for other jobs have ranged 15-30$ a visit but are dependent on distance and time required rather than how many pets need to be cared for. We are also happy to water plants as a different service if you have high maintenance plants that need to be looked after. Please feel free to contact me on 027 588 4889 by text if you would like to clarify details or outline your interest. Happy holidays. 😇

Smoke was also reported in the Hutt Valley and the Wellington coastal suburb of Miramar.

What you need to know:
- Fenz was alerted to the blaze at 11.04pm on Thursday, and the first crews arrived by about 11.10pm.
- About 7.15am Friday, Fire and Emergency NZ said eight crews were still working to bring the vegetation fire under control. Helicopters with monsoon buckets would also be working on Friday morning.
- The fire was burning over about 10ha in Whitireia Park, and people were asked to stay away from the area. No homes were at risk, Fenz said.
- Residents in Wellington’s northern suburbs woke to the sight of a red glow in the sky and the smell of smoke in the air.
- Commuters travelling into Wellington city from the north were also driving through heavy smoke over the motorway in the central Porirua area.
- Fenz said smoke was affecting a large part of Porirua, and the National Public Health Service had advised that people in an area where there was smoke should go inside, close the windows and doors and turn off air conditioning units. Anyone who had been exposed to the smoke and was feeling unwell should contact Healthline (0800 611 116) or ring their doctor for advice.

Beware of inhaling smoke:
People should avoid exposure to smoke if possible.
Smoke may irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and airways. Symptoms could include watery or sore eyes, dry or sore throat, sore nose, cough, tightness of the chest or difficulty breathing. In healthy people, most symptoms disappeared soon after exposure to smoke ended and did not cause long-term health problems. Smokers, the elderly, children, and those with heart disease, asthma or other lung disease were at the greatest risk of harm from smoke inhalation.

From 12:01am, Wednesday 17th January, Wellington, Porirua, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt will move to level 2 water restrictions. All unattended watering systems will be banned, this includes household sprinklers and irrigation systems.

You will be able to water your garden by hand anytime, on any day, so long as you don’t leave your garden hose or watering device unattended.

This helps to limit water waste and helps reduce the risk of tighter water restrictions and further shortages.

Rain is forecast, but the amount expected is not enough to help the situation.
