A new study has found sunscreen, sweetener and chemicals have trickled from Marlborough's sewerage system into its drinking water and irrigation supplies.

Check the water quality of your favourite spot before you head out – we collect water samples every week from 21 sites across Marlborough. In summer the risk of catching a bug from swimming in clear water is usually low. However, after heavy rain, contamination can occur through runoff.

As a rule of thumb, don't swim if the water looks dirty or murky, smells or has scum on its surface.
