Work continues to reduce nitrate levels at Silverstream, near Kaiapoi
Preliminary results have found water quality at a polluted North Canterbury stream may be improved by adding clean water.
Silverstream, a spring-fed lowland waterway near Kaiapoi, is the focus of ongoing efforts to improve water quality and reduce nitrate levels. In large quantities, nitrogen becomes a pollutant and can suck the life from rivers, make drinking water unsafe to drink, and reach levels toxic to life.
ECan senior hydrogeologist Zeb Etheridge says initial results from the first eight weeks of a three-year are promising and their method of adding clean water to the affect waterway could be a real win-win for the environment and the economy.
