The award-winning renovation of the Rangiora RSA has helped boost the club's membership and attract younger patrons.

While many RSA clubs around the country are at risk of closing due to dwindling numbers and increasing overheads, RSA building committee chairman Ross Ditmer said the Rangiora club had been reinvigorated by its recent upgrade, which cost nearly $4 million.

The RSA was a chartered club, meaning anyone could become a member, and a lot of younger people in their 20s had joined, he said.

Copy of a letter to the Editor that I have submitted for Info:
"I see in article on Stuff, that Rangiora is finally going to get a "Community Service Centre" that will offer General Surgery, Orthopedics etc (this is great news, and thanks to Sandra and Paula who worked tirelessly behind the scenes for this outcome), - Common Sense says I thought these services were offered in a Hospital. The need for a 2nd Hospital in Christchurch is well known. The existing Christchurch Hospital is a great facility, and sadly as recent events have shown, well equipped to cope with any emergency.

However; the problems with the existing Hospital are also well known, IE; Capacity (even with the new Acute Services Block been built), Parking, Access to name a few. I note that this new "Facility" is not going to have a Emergency Department. With a Increasing and Aging Population in the Waimakariri (and North Christchurch), this defies Common Sense.

A new Level 4 Hospital in Rangiora would go a long way to address some of these issues."

Charlotte Whittaker, 18, and Esra McGoldrick, 19, who are currently on holiday from their American universities, said they were surprised by the call up.

"I played for the junior Tall Ferns last year and, at 18, I thought it would be at least a couple of years before I'd be considered for the Tall Ferns, so it's just amazing – I still can't believe it," Whittaker says.

This month we’re rolling up our sleeves, putting up our hands, and saying ‘YES’ to giving our time and skills to projects that make Aotearoa a better place to live.

As a mostly volunteer led organisation, our members know first hand the value and impact that a single volunteer can make in our communities. Imagine then how much can be achieved when several volunteers or even an entire street or neighbourhood decide to work together to achieve the same goal!

Whether you plan to coordinate your own volunteer driven activity, take part in one that’s already been setup, participate in National Volunteer Week (16-22 June), or simply show your own volunteers some extra love this month, know that every bit of effort to give back is a priceless investment in all of our futures.

Want to share your thoughts?

Let us know how you’re getting involved this month by tagging us in your posts + using the following hashtag so we can see what you get up to:
