The daily average maximum temperature over the last six days in Kapiti was 27.5 degrees, with the highest being 29.5º on Monday evening, around 5.00pm that I also recorded in my garden. The official thermometers in Waikanae Park recorded 28.8 and the airport 27.8.

Over the last 10 years it seems temperatures above 29 degrees have only occurred three times previously; 30º in Feb 2022, 31º in Jan 2019 and 30º in Jan 2015.

The humid, thundery weather over the country has also brought heavy squally showers, particularly to inland areas, but fortunately Kapiti benefitted from a couple of these coming in from the north-west on Monday and Tuesday mornings, delivering around 18mm in total.

I was unaware of any thunderstorm warning late yesterday afternoon, but did notice thundery-looking clouds over the eastern ranges, and we did have a few spots here. It was disappointing that no real rain developed, but not surprising, as rain from that quarter is pretty rare.

It's been over a month since we had any worthwhile rain so drought conditions are settling-in, particularly with increasing temperatures. On Wednesday, Jan 17 the maximum temperature in Kapiti was 27.4 degrees and yesterday 28 degrees, both recorded in central Paraparaumu. Also, over the last two nights the temperature did not drop below 20 degrees there.
