Angela McLeod chasing top job
Angela McLeod is hoping to defy history to be elected mayor of Upper Hutt in October.
The third-term city councillor is hoping to unseat Wayne Guppy, who was first elected mayor in 2001.
Upper Hutt has only had two mayors since 1977 – Rex Kirton and Guppy – and there only has been one female mayor – Doris Nicholson – from 1971 to 1977.
McLeod is campaigning on the need for change, after being the highest polling council candidate and narrowly missing out on the mayoralty in 2019.
Poll: Are Kiwis allergic to “exuberance”? 🥝
In The Post’s opinion piece on the developments set to open across Aotearoa in 2026, John Coop suggests that, as a nation, we’re “allergic to exuberance.”
We want to know: Are we really allergic to showing our excitement?
Is it time to lean into a more optimistic view of the place we call home? As big projects take shape and new opportunities emerge, perhaps it’s worth asking whether a little more confidence (and enthusiasm!) could do us some good.
