What is a tsunami?

Communications from Tauranga City Council

A tsunami isn’t just one big wave. It is a series of powerful waves with strong currents that move fast.

They are the speed of a car when on land and as fast as a plane when travelling through the ocean. A tsunami cannot be outrun.
