Road Kill

Tania from Whakamarama

I find the number of dead hedgehogs, pukekos, rabbits etc on the roads absolutely disgusting. I frequently stop and move dead birds and rabbits off Esdaile Road so that I don't have to drive over them or try to miss driving over them.

If a member of your family was hit by a car and simply left in the road, you would be outraged. Yet there is clearly no thought or consideration for the animal or other road users. Hit any wildlife, just leave it there. NOT everyone wants to drive over dead wildlife. I am an animal lover and don't have a sensitivity chip missing like so many people clearly do.
How fast does a hedgehog run in front of your car? Clearly so fast that you just can't avoid hitting it. When you see a rabbit or pukeko or hawk in the road, is it a New Zealand sport that you speed up and hit it?

If you just can't miss hitting it, possibly due to substandard driving skills, then have the courtesy to stop and move it out the road. Obviously one can't stop on the highway to move a dead animal out of the road, but on Esdaile, Pahoia, Youngsten etc etc you certainly can. It is just up to the kind of person you are.

Shame on You!

Lisa from Otumoetai

This is what greeted workers at Brookfield Sallies yesterday morning. All of it looks like it should have gone straight to the tip, which is what the Sallies will now have to pay to do. Surely whoever does this has no conscience. The Sallies do an amazing job of helping people in times of need and they don't need to be spending any money they receive on doing your dirty work, especially at this time of year.
