The Canterbury District Health Board says a moderate cover of potentially toxic algae (benthic cyanobacteria) has been found in the Waipara River at Teviotdale.
There are several access points along the river where the algae may be present, so people are urged to watch out for it and avoid contact. People and animals – especially dogs – should avoid the affected area until the health warning has been lifted.

More than 2500 residents live in Pegasus – a standalone township off State Highway 1 near Woodend in North Canterbury – but they were blocked from entering or leaving as firefighters battled a suspicious blaze at the highway intersection on Wednesday evening.
An emergency exit road that opened eventually was described by emergency services staff as "not ideal".
Do you think changes need to be made to Pegasus' emergency access road? Are you concerned, or not bothered, by the fact Pegasus only has one official way in and out?
