Dogs on the back of a ute, on a dusty rural road: a scene that captures heartland New Zealand. But new MPI animal welfare regulations promise to complicate moving sheepdogs between paddocks, and other farming practices besides, with the threat of a fine from October.

Dogs on the back of a truck, trailer or ute, travelling on a public road, had to be tied up with a leash or rope, if not in a cage or crate. The only exception to the rule was if farm dogs were actively helping to move livestock along public roads, in which case they could jump on and off a vehicle.

People caught breaking that law could be fined up to $900 under new Animal Welfare Regulations from October. Read the ministry's guide to the Animal Welfare (Care and Procedures) Regulations at mpi.govt.nz. Read more here

However there are concerns that accidents are happening all the time and not being reported. Have you been affected by the slippery paths?

2 YO Male Chihuahua Available for Adoption

Karyn from Blenheim

Ricky is a big lovable goofball - he pursues everything with great enthusiasm, whether that's butting in to get pats and cuddles, leaping around the house, attacking his teddies, or tussling with a doggy playmate. He is a very affectionate dog, and will happily spend hours asleep on your lap … View moreRicky is a big lovable goofball - he pursues everything with great enthusiasm, whether that's butting in to get pats and cuddles, leaping around the house, attacking his teddies, or tussling with a doggy playmate. He is a very affectionate dog, and will happily spend hours asleep on your lap or snuggled up to you.

Ricky is also a bit anxious, and due to past experiences, lacks trust in people. As a result he needs a calm and patient owner who is able to offer him a very structured environment and routine that he can depend on. Once trust is established, work will need to be done on his obedience and recall as he currently suffers from "teenage selective hearing", so we are looking for someone who will have the time to focus on him.

Ricky is great with other animals, but we will also consider rehoming him as an only dog as he is happy enough to spend time on his own. He is comfortable spending time outside, and would be a suitable dog for a full time worker who wants an indoor/outdoor dog - so long as you spend quality time with him in the evenings and weekends (please note, that like all chihuahuas he must be kept indoors at night!).

Ricky is 2 years old, and comes vaccinated, flea and worm treated, and desexed.

If you are interested in Ricky please go to the NZ Chihuahua Rescue website nzchihuahuarescue.co.nz...
download and fill in the adoption application form and return it to nzchihuahuarescue@gmail.com. Enquiries via Facebook, TradeMe, messages or email will not be considered. An adoption fee of $500 will apply.

Price: $500

Has your pet had a brush with death?

Megan Leov Reporter from Marlborough Express

A golden retriever with a penchant for ocean swims has survived a close shave with death.

Toto was enjoying the holidays at his Blackwood Bay bach, in the Marlborough Sounds, on Sunday when he was stung by a stingray.
Luckily there was a vet close at hand.
