The lunch wasn't a grand affair, we had no celebs join us but I did have two responses to my request. Thank you Paul Metcalfe and friend for taking time out of your busy working day as a builder to come along and support our efforts. Thank you to others from local schools who also offered.

I would also like to add that now is a great time to get your diabetes under control and before the silly season starts! We all know what its like "I'll just have one...." and then hey presto its January 13th and you have put on 2-3kg which you can't budge. Talk to us now about mindful eating in diabetes - 07 5713422

Hi neighbours,
With just a month until Christmas, we at the Rotorua Review have decided to get into the Christmas spirit by going on the hunt for the city's best Christmas tree.
Let's be honest, the city's public tree last year left little to be inspired by.
The council has promised to spruce it up this year, but we feel the best trees are probably the ones you guys all have in your own homes.
And it Doesn't have to be a traditional tree- we'd be keen for people to think outside the box.

In Hamilton they run a competition every year called Trees of the Meteor with people making trees out of all types of materials.

The 2014 winners made their tree out of badminton shuttlecocks and was an absolute stunner.

So get your creative decorating caps and send us your photos.
* To enter email a high resolution photo (1MB or more) to nicola.brennan@fairfaxmedia.co.nz by December 15.

We will run people's photos each week in the lead up to our last issue this year in the paper, on Neighbourly and Facebook.

A winner will be determined by a combination of public and Rotorua Review staff votes and will receive a $50 Prezzy card.

We're all busy - so how can we get our kids out of the car on the school run?

With it has come worsened air pollution, greater congestion, and increased danger as more kids are involved in road accidents. Worse, it has undermined our community cohesion: Schools can and should be the hearts of our communities
.

We're backing schools to set up walking buses and other solutions, with parents and volunteers helping local kids get to class safely.
We wrote to the nation's mayors pleading with them to lower speed limits outside schools, and many have come back to us with expressions of support. We talked to well-known New Zealanders with school-aged kids, and they united behind the campaign.

You can get involved too. We know people are busy, so the Sunday Star-Times and Neighbourly are encouraging families to choose one day a week when they and their kids walk, scoot, cycle - even ride a horse if that's what works for you!

I've chosen Mondays as the days I'll cycle to school with my 6-year-old son. And Neighbourly has set up a special pledge page, where you can choose a day when you will try to Foot It with your kids, talk with others doing the same - and go into the draw to win one of 50 Micro scooters. www.neighbourly.co.nz...
