Age Concern Rotorua Radio Station

Rory from Ngongotaha

Age Concern Rotorua is dedicated to ensuring that the 10,000 over 65's in our city and surrounds are connected to the community and that we are a safe and credible service for our elderly to access. Many of our elderly face isolation and are frail, in poor health, have minimal or no family contact, have financial concerns, lack transport options and have social disconnect issues that make life less than great. We would like to set up our own Age Concern radio station and have investigated a system that a number of schools around the country operate. It is a low power FM broadcasting unit which will have the capacity to reach people up to a 5km range. We run a number of programmes which reduce social isolation and we see this as another means of connecting our elderly to their community. We have a number of our clients who have experience in the broadcasting field and they have indicated a willingness to volunteer to host the programme. Many of the people in this age group have a radio and generally are avid listeners. We have a number of ideas about how the station will run and have a quote to set it up for less than $5000.

Poll: Are Kiwis allergic to “exuberance”? 🥝

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

In The Post’s opinion piece on the developments set to open across Aotearoa in 2026, John Coop suggests that, as a nation, we’re “allergic to exuberance.”

We want to know: Are we really allergic to showing our excitement?

Is it time to lean into a more optimistic view of the place we call home? As big projects take shape and new opportunities emerge, perhaps it’s worth asking whether a little more confidence (and enthusiasm!) could do us some good.
