Water restrictions to ramp up as dry spell lingers in Tasman district
Watering lawns and topping up swimming pools will be prohibited in settlements on and around the Waimea Plains from Monday as river and groundwater levels drop in the area.
A lack of rain, wind, consistently high temperatures and increasing demand for water is behind the falling levels.
Tasman District Council dry weather task force convener Dennis Bush-King on Wednesday said that with no meaningful rain relief expected, water restrictions would be extended from stage one to stage two, effective from Monday.
Stage two restrictions, a cut of 35 per cent in permitted allocations, would apply in the Upper Catchment, Reservoir, Waimea West, Delta, Golden Hills, and the Upper Confined Aquifer zones on the Waimea Plains.
