Marlborough men battled British Lions - but never alone and never victorious
As the 2017 British and Irish Lions prepare to kick off their New Zealand tour, thoughts go back to halcyon days when the visitors from the north gave all this country's provincial unions a chance to tackle the tourists.
Although Marlborough have never played a British touring team on their own, players from this province have been part of combined sides on seven occasions.
It all began nearly 100 years ago when the 1908 Anglo-Welsh side, as the name suggests a mix of players from England and Wales, strode onto Trafalgar Park in Nelson to take on the best a combined Marlborough and Nelson side could offer.
