One of world's oldest bird species found at same Canterbury site as monster penguin

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from Northern Outlook

Hi neighbours, check out this awesome discovery in our part of the world - one of the world's oldest bird species has been found at the same North Canterbury site a monster penguin fossil was found.

Bony-toothed birds (Pelagornithids), an ancient family of huge seafaring birds, were thought to have evolved in the Northern Hemisphere, until the discovery of the family's oldest but smallest member in New Zealand.

Amateur palaeontologist Leigh Love discovered the partial Protodontopteryx skeleton at the Waipara Greensand fossil site - the same area where he found evidence of a 1.6 metre-high giant penguin in 2018.
