New surgical hospital to open in Queenstown in the new year
An independent surgical hospital is set to open in Queenstown in January.
The hospital will be known as Southern Cross CLT Ltd and is a 50/50 joint venture between the local Central Lakes Trust and Southern Cross Healthcare Limited.
The Southern District Health Board has contracted the hospital, located at Kawarau Park, to undertake elective surgical procedures.
It will also operate a regular weekly operating list for acute orthopaedic procedures, saving patients the need to travel to Invercargill for treatment.
The hospital will have three operating theatres, although only one will open initially, and the 13 inpatient beds will each have their own en suite bathroom.
Specialist surgery will increase over time, including orthopaedics, ophthalmology, urology, gynaecology, plastic and general surgery.
The hospital will also provide accident and emergency services, but will be funded by ACC to provide surgery for patients who qualify.
