Paraglider hit by drone landed unhurt, but situation could have been 'a different story'
Panmure resident Davy Binois was paragliding at Karioitahi Beach in February 2018 when his glider’s lines were struck by a drone.
He was about 100 metres high and enjoying the good flying conditions when he heard a small noise “like an engine”.
When he looked up, he was shocked to find a drone had become stuck in his right-hand side brake line which connected his harness to the glider’s canopy.
As a result of the multiple-propellered drone becoming tangled, Binois’ right-hand line became shorter, as if the right brakes were on, which made it difficult to steer the glider.
Binois said while it was a stressful situation, he managed to land uninjured and with “no problems”.
“It could have been a different story if the drone struck the glider in the canopy.”
