We're all busy - so how can we get our kids out of the car on the school run?

With it has come worsened air pollution, greater congestion, and increased danger as more kids are involved in road accidents. Worse, it has undermined our community cohesion: Schools can and should be the hearts of our communities
.

We're backing schools to set up walking buses and other solutions, with parents and volunteers helping local kids get to class safely.
We wrote to the nation's mayors pleading with them to lower speed limits outside schools, and many have come back to us with expressions of support. We talked to well-known New Zealanders with school-aged kids, and they united behind the campaign.

You can get involved too. We know people are busy, so the Sunday Star-Times and Neighbourly are encouraging families to choose one day a week when they and their kids walk, scoot, cycle - even ride a horse if that's what works for you!

I've chosen Mondays as the days I'll cycle to school with my 6-year-old son. And Neighbourly has set up a special pledge page, where you can choose a day when you will try to Foot It with your kids, talk with others doing the same - and go into the draw to win one of 50 Micro scooters. www.neighbourly.co.nz...

Water supplied to Wellington, Porirua, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt is safe to drink.

Monday's earthquake stirred up sediment in reservoirs and pipes that caused discolouration of the water - but it is still safe to drink.

We received reports of dirty water from all over the four cities shortly after the earthquake. It should now have settled. However, there may be some places where it hasn't, or where dirty water still needs to be cleared.

If you do have dirty water please call your city council so that we can come out and flush the mains. Once it has been flushed, we'll let you know so that you can flush your inside pipes. The best way to do this is to run an outside tap until it clears. If it hasn't cleared after 15 minutes please contact your city council again. We'll then get in touch to work with you on isolating the problem.

Safety Belts On A Bus

Maureen J from Porirua City Centre

I would like to know do you wear a safety belt on the Bus or Not. I was talking to this person yesterday and he said that it would be safer not to wear a safety belt on a Bus.

What do you say all?

When Lighting Fireworks...............STAY SAFE!!

Remember these simple safety tips to keep you, your family and your Neighbours Safe.
*   Read and follow instructions on fireworks
*   Read them with a torch..........NOT a lighter
*   Light in an open area away from flammable materials
*   Fireworks, alcohol and drugs are a dangerous combination
*   Never let your children light fireworks
*   Keep a hose or bucket of water handy
*   If one of the fireworks fails to ignite, do not try to re-ignite
*   Burns should be put under cold running water for at least 10 minutes
THINK OF OTHERS:
*   Fireworks are noisy - consider your neighbours and young children
*   Keep your pets inside
*   Point fireworks at the stars.......not your mates!!

We love meeting our Neighbours.....But lets not meet by accident this Guy Fawkes. Have Fun and Stay Safe!!

Are you interested in joining a paper craft and adult colouring group at Churton Park Community Centre?

This group would be for anyone who has an interest in adult colouring, scrap booking, card making, origami and any other paper craft activity. The group would be self-managing, in that there is no formal tutor or instructor. The idea would be that people could bring along craft or colouring that they are currently working on, or would like to start working on in the group. People could work individually or share their creative ideas and talents within the group. This would be one of our ‘koha groups’ with participants giving a gold coin donation. Tea and coffee would be provided by the centre.
If you have an interest in us starting up a ‘paper craft and adult colouring group' here at the centre, or if you would like to talk a bit more about this, please  Ph 830 4802 or email tracey.read@wcc.govt.nz

We wish everyone a safe Halloween but we need to remember that not everyone wants to be part of Halloween celebrations.

For some older people Halloween can be a frightening and scary time so here are some helpful tips so everyone can enjoy themselves and come away with fond memories:

- Make it a family affair and go trick or treating with your kids or a group from your neighbourhood.
- Call your neighbours in advance to make sure it’s okay to call in to trick-or-treat
- If you don’t want trick-or-treaters calling print or make a sign for your letterbox or window saying no thanks. (New Zealand Police have had downloadable signs)
- If you are a trick-or-treater, respect the people who have a sign asking for you to stay away
- Keep your lights on and guests outside
- Keep your eye out for your older family members, friends and neighbours this Halloween and make sure we all get to enjoy the celebration.

Remember you can help make this a great celebration for your family and community and a great opportunity to connect with your older neighbours.

If you want to go one step further Age Concern New Zealand would like to encourage all Kiwis to sign up to their Dignity Champion Campaign to show a commitment to breaking down ageism and stereotypes and encouraging dignity and respect for older people.

Become an Age Concern Dignity Champion www.ageconcern.org.nz... this Halloween and involve and celebrate the older people in your lives.
