Hi neighbours,

Did you hear a "sonic boom" and see an object flying across the Canterbury sky? Many residents witnessed a suspected meteor this week.

The burning rock was at least the size of a fist – much larger than what astronomers usually see above New Zealand. Usually the objects are about the size of a grain of sand.

The arrival of a meteor can be impressive, with even something pebble-sized lighting up in the sky, Canterbury Astronomical Society president Euan Mason says.

So what did you think of the meteor? Where were you when you saw it? And do you see them often from your place? Let us know in the replies!

A spring storm bringing gales and snow to parts of New Zealand has disrupted Cook Strait ferries, closed skifields in the south, and caused slips in Wellington.

MetService has issued the following warning for the eastern coast of Marlborough
Valid: 17 hours from 1:00pm Monday to 6:00am Tuesday
Forecast: Gale southerlies are expected to develop this morning, then rise to severe gale gusting 120km/h in exposed places during this time.

"Currently most of the rain we're getting is through Canterbury and Marlborough, and we're also expecting snow to about 300 metres there," MetService meteorologist Philippa Murdoch said. Snow was expected to fall to about 300m through to evening in southern Marlborough.

The New Zealand Transport Agency advised drivers to pass with care and expect some delays.

FERRIES: Bluebridge cancelled its 2pm sailing from Picton and 1.30pm from Wellington due to the weather.
