An active front over central New Zealand is moving slowly eastwards today and early Friday, bringing rain and possible thunderstorms to much of the upper South Island and North Island.
Area: Marlborough Sounds and coast north of Clarence
Valid: 9 hours from 1:00pm to 10:00pm Thursday
Forecast: Periods of rain, may become heavy with thundery downpours. Rainfall accumulations may approach short duration warning criteria.
Area: Wellington and Wairarapa from Featherston southwards
Valid: 11 hours from 3:00pm Thursday to 2:00am Friday
Forecast: Periods of rain, may become heavy with thundery downpours. Rainfall accumulations may approach short duration warning criteria.

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
