Contractors need to blast an overhanging rock from above the highway in the Karangahake Gorge. There will be cordons at Paeroa and Waitawheta Bridge.
The road will close from 9pm, and open as soon as debris has been cleared – possibly single lane – as soon as possible.
Alternative routes are via SH27/29 over the Kaimai Range. Or via SH25/25A.
The Transport Agency urges people to make sure they are through the gorge before 9pm, and to check on the website before attempting to travel in this area.
