Poll: Should we be giving the green light to new mining projects? 💰🌲

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

The Environmental Protection Authority announced this week that a proposed mine in Central Otago (near Cromwell) is about to enter its fast-track assessment process. A final decision could come within six months, and if it’s approved, construction might start as early as mid-2026.

We want to know: Should mining projects like this move ahead?

Keen to dig deeper? Mike White has the scoop.

Te Wharemauku Awa Ropu formed!

Marco from Paraparaumu

Te Wharemauku Awa Rōpū
Protecting and restoring the life, health and mana of our local stream.

Why this group has been formed
The Wharemauku Stream (Awa) is a vital taonga, a living thread connecting our communities across generations. Flowing from the hills above Paraparaumu to the sea, it passes through backyards, reserves, Coastlands, the town centre and wetlands.

See the attached Press Release with more information.

We envision a thriving awa where the mana and mauri of the Wharemauku stream are deeply respected, and its health uplifts the wellbeing of our people. A place where children can swim and explore, wildlife can flourish and fish return freely.

By restoring the awa’s health, creating rich wildlife corridors and engaging our community, we honour our role as kaitiaki. Through unity of purpose and collective action we can restore joy, vitality and mauri ora to the stream, knowing that in caring for it, we care for ourselves and future generations.

What we do
Te Wharemauku Awa Rōpū brings people together, champions the awa’s wellbeing and leads restoration, ensuring efforts come together under a shared vision.

Connect — We bring together individuals, mana whenua, community groups, schools and agencies who care about the awa. By sharing mahi, exchanging knowledge, and coordinating activities across the catchment, we turn isolated projects into collective impact.

Advocate — We champion the health and mana of Te Wharemauku Awa by advancing a shared vision. We raise awareness, build understanding, and work with key stakeholders and decision-makers to amplify the awa’s voice, ensuring its needs shape planning, development and restoration.

Restore — We mobilise groups, inspire action and lead hands-on restoration. Through education, resource coordination and planting, we empower guardianship across the community, knowing that together we can achieve more for the awa’s health and mauri ora.

Where we focus
From source to sea, we support restoration and care across the catchment:
● Upper Catchment (Headwaters to Waimanu Grove)
● Kaitawa Reserve (Waimanu Grove to Epiha St)
● Coastlands (Epiha St to Rimu Road)
● Town Centre (Rimu Road to Kiwi Road)
● Town Centre tributary (Ihakara commercial area)
● Airport (Kiwi Road to Moa Road)
● Raumati (Moa Road to the beach)
Each area has its own unique opportunities and challenges, but together they form one connected, living system.

How you can help
This group connects, supports and amplifies the mahi of all who care for the Wharemauku, whether you’re already involved or just want to stay informed and help.
