Hi Neighbours
Here at The Doctors we would love to hear how you prefer to book your doctor’s appointments. With busy schedules, different people find different methods easier.

For some, online booking is very convenient, you can make an appointment anytime without needing to wait on the phone. Others still prefer calling the clinic and speaking to a real person, especially if they have specific questions about their visit.

Your feedback helps us understand what works best for our patients and how we can improve access to care.

Waikanae has 2 squash courts that are situated inside the rugby club house. Waikanae has, up to now, had a small but dedicated number of squash players. The rugby club owns and manages the squash clubs' finances and maintenance.
Some months ago, the squash players were informed that the one squash court will be used by rugby players for a changing room, as well as to store the rugby paraphernalia. This court would, therefore, not be available for squash during the rugby season. After the rugby season, however, the decision was taken by the rugby club to make that a permanent arrangement, so the squash players were down to one court-very difficult for squash players during club days.
Three months ago, we were informed by Mr Sam Tok from the rugby committee, that the annual squash fees are to be increased by 83 per cent - to $350 dollars per year despite the fact that only one court would be available. The cost is similar to the Kapiti squash club which has 3 courts as well as bar and sauna facilities.

The stated reason for this increase, was the cost of electricity and other overhead costs.

I emailed Mr Tok informing him that my prediction is that many squash members will default and terminate membership. This is precisely what has happened with only a small number of members paying the $350.
These members were informed by Mr Tok this month that the squash club is now no longer viable and will be closed for squash.

What the rugby club plans to do with the second squash court I do not know. I can't help but think that the hidden agenda was to get the squash players out in order to use the remaining court for their own purposes, and not the cost factor mentioned.

Historically the same scenario happened with the cricket players who are now locked out of the rugby club facilities although they still play their games on the pitch on the rugby paddock.

Sadly, this spells the end of squash Waikanae. Some players have joined Kapiti in spite of the inconvenience of having to travel to Paraparaumu for a game.

I resent the high-handed way in which the rugby club handled the situation. We received no communication from Mr Tok despite many emails and pleas to keep the squash court going and to keep the annual membership costs reasonable. Hopefully the contributors who sponsor the rugby club will take note.

A new scam is out there with scammers claiming to be ANZ through WhatsApp, texts, emails, and phone calls. Their goal? To get your personal or banking info — and your money.

ANZ have shared details about how to protect yourself, and these apply to any message from your bank.

Think twice before acting and...
✅Double-check who’s contacting you. If something feels off, don’t reply.
✅Contact the bank directly using official details (their website or app) - not the message you received.
✅Don’t click links in unexpected or suspicious messages.
✅Never share sensitive info like codes, passwords, or banking logins - they will never ask for these.
✅Don’t allow remote access or screen sharing on your device, even if they claim to be from a trusted organisation.

ANZ shared that they may contact you to check a transaction but they will never ask for access to your device, security codes, or to move your money.

As Cyclone Vaianu continues to move south, it is forecast to bring extremely strong winds, heavy rain and large swells to large parts of New Zealand over the weekend.

This storm has the potential to be a significant and damaging event. We know this will be unwelcome news for communities that have recently been affected by severe weather and are still recovering.

More rain falling on ground that’s already saturated, means impacts like fallen trees, landslides, flooding and dangerous river conditions are more likely.

Please stay safe in severe weather. If life, health or property is in danger, call 111 immediately.

During a storm, stay inside. Don't walk around outside. Don't drive unless necessary. Strong winds can fell trees and poles, tear off roofs, and cause branches and debris to fly at high speed.

Put safety first. Don’t take any chances. Act quickly if you see rising water. Floods and flash floods can happen quickly. If you see rising water, do not wait for official warnings. Head for higher ground and stay away from floodwater.

Do not try to walk, play, swim, or drive in floodwater.

If you see a landslide, move out of its path and stay away from it. It is important to recognise the warning signs and act quickly.

When it is safe to do so, check on your neighbours and anyone who might need your help.

For advice on how to prepare for dangerous winds and severe weather visit GetReady.govt.nz

For local emergency updates, check your council's and Civil Defence Emergency Management Group’s websites and social media.

Random Thoughts for the Day

Mike from Paraparaumu

I used to prevaricate - but now I'm not so sure.
Does the name Pavlov ring any bells?
Crazy paving isn't all it's cracked up to be.
I'm just not cut out for topiary.
Where would we be without rhetorical questions?

Cheers - Mike
