You get hold of some plastic tubing about 6cms diameter, … View moreToday NIWA confirmed an El Nino weather event for the summer. That may mean a long spell of dry weather, so I'd like to share a system for saving young trees and shrubs that I have used with great effect and with a minimal use of water. You get hold of some plastic tubing about 6cms diameter, from plumbing supplies, or second hand from building recyclers. You cut it into about 1 meter lengths and bury one end of each about 15 cms in the soil so it sits upright over part of the root ball. When the dry hits you patrol with your trusty watering can and a kitchen funnel, filling the tubes up to the top. The water goes directly to the roots with no evaporation. Kia kaha. Mike
