An invasion in Taranaki! πΎπ
A sharp-eyed young Kiwi has spotted an unwelcome visitor, the invasive gold clam, in Lake Rotomanu. Because of this discovery, the lake and scenic reserve have had to close for now.
Why the big concern? These tiny clams can blanket river and lake beds, outcompete native species, clog important water infrastructure, and harm overall water quality.

The Environmental Protection Authority announced this week that a proposed mine in Central Otago (near Cromwell) is about to enter its fast-track assessment process. A final decision could come within six months, and if itβs approved, construction might start as early as mid-2026.
