Ban on outdoor water use in Okato
A ban on watering gardens and washing the car is about to come into force for residents in a coastal Taranaki town.
New Plymouth District Council is restricting outdoor water use in Okato because of low river levels. The ban starts on Wednesday. Residents cannot water gardens or wash cars and house windows while the ban is in place, NPDC chief operating officer Kelvin Wright said.
New Plymouth district is currently under water restrictions, with handheld hoses permitted on the odds and evens address system. The use of sprinklers, irrigation systems and unattended hoses is banned.
Wright asked Oakura residents to cut back on how much water they use and keep to the odds and evens system for hand-held hoses.

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
