Have you heard their name before?
There are many arms to Sustainable Taranaki firstly they are a Not-for-Profit Organisation or as I like to say For Purpose – and today this column will focus on just one of those Nature Clean Ups

What are their key objectives
• Empowering the local community: not only leading cleanups but also supporting local groups and hapū to run their own events
• Discussing and educating about waste issues in Aotearoa New Zealand: including impact of littering, how to reduce waste, recycling...
• Encouraging people and businesses to take ownership of the protection of their local taiao (environment)
• Bringing people together and building connections in the community
• Inviting people to stay active while protecting our environment and giving back to their community
• Exploring different parts of Taranaki

Restoring Our Coastlines: Sustainable Taranaki's Nature and Beach Cleanups
Taranaki's natural beauty is one of its greatest treasures, but maintaining it requires collective effort. Sustainable Taranaki's Nature and Beach Cleanups program exemplifies community-driven environmental stewardship, bringing together volunteers to protect and rejuvenate our local landscapes.

Community Engagement and Environmental Impact
Since its inception, the Nature and Beach Cleanups initiative has mobilized hundreds of volunteers across the region. In 2024 alone, 194 participants collected over 2,175 liters of rubbish, with 48% diverted from landfills through recycling and upcycling efforts. These cleanups not only remove waste but also foster a sense of community and shared responsibility for our environment.
From April 2023 – April 2025 Taranaki Nature Clean Ups involved 566 Volunteers and 891 hours spent collecting 7,465 litres of rubbish - of which there was 47% diverted from landfill and 60.5 kilometers cleaned.

Collaborative Efforts and Local Partnerships
Sustainable Taranaki collaborates with various local organizations and businesses to enhance the effectiveness of their cleanups. Events like the Waitara Beach cleanup have seen support from local artists and zero-waste educators, enriching the experience for volunteers and emphasizing the importance of community involvement in environmental conservation.

How to Get Involved
Residents interested in participating can find upcoming events and volunteer opportunities on Sustainable Taranaki's website. No prior experience is necessary, just a willingness to contribute to the well-being of our natural surroundings. If you have an area that you are passionate about and would like to promote and would like support with (equipment, contacts, communication) to do that then then either check out the Sustainable Taranaki website or contact Volunteering New Plymouth to help with details

Where can you learn more? If you are keen to learn more about Sustainable Taranaki, a Volly Voice session is aired on Access Radio on Sunday at 2pm. This show is also available by going to the either Access Radio Taranaki website, these recordings can be found under Community and scroll down to Volly Voices or to Volunteering New Plymouth website and look under Volunteers and Volly Calls and there will be a link to the podcast

Real Police officers are warning Kiwis to be vigilant of cold callers posing as Police officers, as a pesky scam rears its head.
In the past year, Police have worked quickly to warn the public as these scam calls emerged.

Waitematā CIB’s acting Detective Senior Sergeant Ben Bergin says, “unsuspecting victims are essentially being called out of the blue under a ruse”.
“The story changes slightly, but it will usually involve some sort of investigation and this ‘officer’ will report having located a valuable item of yours, such as a passport.
“He will need your help or ask for your personal information.
“The caller speaks with an English accent and provides a bogus ID number to the victim.”

If you receive a phone call such as this, Police advise the public to be extremely cautious.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Bergin says previous iterations of this scam has involved scammers asking people to withdraw cash as part of ‘an investigation’ or handing over bank details.
Police made several arrests last year over the scam.
“We strongly advise that you hang up,” he says.
“From time-to-time, Police officers may contact you as part of their genuine duties.
“It can be a bit surprising to receive a call unexpectantly, so stop and think if you get a far-fetched story shared down the telephone line.”

In the past week, Police have received reports from Kiwis on both islands, including: Warkworth, Riverhead, Royal Oak, Ngaruawahia and in the Clutha and Queenstown-Lakes districts.
“Fortunately, at this stage we are not aware of any victims losing money,” acting Detective Senior Sergeant Bergin says.
“Those recipients have done the right thing and ended the call and reported it to the real Police.”
If you have received a similar call, please report this to Police online now or call 105.

𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗭𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲 ⤵️
🚔Police will never ask for your bank details, pin numbers or banking log in.
🚔Police do not offer prize money
🚔 Police will never ask you to go to a bank and withdraw your own cash
🚔 Stop and think: If the call seems off, hang up and call 105 to verify the officer’s identity, or request a callback.

The sound of factory violins can deter students from wanting to play. Rekindle the passion with an affordable, handcrafted instrument and bow direct from the artisan.

I make string instruments, and have this player package for sale.
The violin and bow are both to my own design.
VIOLIN:
Has deep arching for a mellow tone.
Maple backs, sides and neck, with spruce face. Fingerboards, tailpieces and chins for each instrument are cut from the same pieces of Rimu.
Strings are always Pirastro Tonica (is easier for me to compare tone between instruments).
Note that each instrument has a unique purfling design, and the back of each scroll is carved with a Kowhai motif.
Varnish is traditional shellac and rosin combination.
The construction history and details of each instrument can be found on my website
"violinsbyjoel.blogspot.com...

BOW: Also to my own design - a geniune J. Dodd bow, just not the London maker! I cut it from a piece of upcycled Rimu, and I used American white oak for the frog with real Mother of Pearl slider. The tip plate is bone.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions regarding the sale. Prices are negotiable, but please be mindful that these are not knocked out in a factory - each is hand crafted by myself.
