The Moths and Butterflies of New Zealand Trust is doing amazing things to achieve their mission of to ensuring our biodiversity promotes a thriving moth and butterfly population. The charity has a great “special offer” available now for new members: a free copy of George Gibbs’ excellent book on “The Monarch Butterfly in New Zealand” as well as a colourful ID poster of New Zealand’s butterflies. And they put the subscription to really good use… they’ve listed 19 ways (and I suspect there are more) on their website.

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
