Hi neighbours,

Labour will make Matariki New Zealand's 12th public holiday from 2022 if re-elected, Jacinda Ardern has announced.

The new winter public holiday would fall at some point during the Matariki period, with an expectation that it would always happen on either a Monday or a Friday.

The policy announcement follows a series of public campaigns for Matariki, which acts as the Māori New Year, to be recognised.

We want to hear your thoughts about Matariki becoming a public holiday. Do you support the idea, or are you against it? Perhaps you have a counter proposal.

Doors open at 6:15, bring your own nibbles and drinks. Enjoy an early dinner and a drink at the Sprig and Fern opposite the hall before the movie starts, many of us will be there.

IMPORTANT: Due to ongoing alert level two chairs will be set up with the distance required by the governments regulations. If you haven't paid online, please try to bring the exact amount of cash (12 dollars per person). All income will help the hall with ongoing costs during these times of low income.

Tom Hanks absolutely shines as he transforms into the beloved children's show star in a role his career has been perhaps always leading to. Hanks embodies all that is Fred Rogers, from his delicate mannerism to beautifully authentic warmth with others. Hanks pulls at your heartstrings with every word uttered during the film's run.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood is based on a true life story about the relationship that develops between Fred Rogers and a cynical reporter who is loath to interview him for a piece on American heroes.

In the movie, the reporter is Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) who gives an amazing performance. Through his interactions with Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks), Vogel begins to understand that part of him is broken. The healing process begins as their friendship develops and you see Fred Rogers teaching him to understand, accept and voice his emotions and feelings. It is beautiful.Tom Hanks is masterful in this role at bringing out the transformation of his friend.

Nelson City Councillor Rachel Sanson is pushing for council to move away from clear cutting pine forestry, and towards selective logging and native forests - saying the economic and environmental costs outweighed the benefits.

Currently pine plantations comprise the majority of the council's 640ha forestry assets, although in 2018 a decision was made to retire 140ha and replant them in permanent native forest.

What do you think council should do with its forestry assets in the future? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
