Inspection, Test and Tag of Electrical Appliances

Who we are?
At TAG IT we are passionate about helping people and their businesses comply with all necessary legislation. We are aware that it can get a little confusing so we aim to make your responsibilities regarding electrical safety as simple and easy to follow as possible. We obviously regard compliance and safety, but even more importantly, we value the people that the businesses represent (owners, employees, clients).

We do inspections, testing and tagging of electrical appliances and minor repairs. All the while helping you to understand what’s acceptable (and not) and your responsibilities to keep it that way.

Why do it, is it important? What “tagging” is?

According to the Health and Safety at Work Act (2015), a business is obliged to ensure the health and safety of their workers and members of the public, as far as is “reasonably practicable” . While this doesn’t directly mean electrical equipment needs to be ‘tested and tagged’, it’s a great way to make sure you’re on the right track. We follow the Australia and New Zealand Standards (ASNZS) 3760, which were created to appease the Electricity (Safety) Regulations (2010). These are the rules that Worksafe will assess unsafe electrical equipment, in the event of a workplace accident/injury.

In the findings of unsafe electrical equipment being used after a workplace accident/injury, the business may incur possible prosecution by Worksafe and a fine of up $50,000 . Worst case scenario: if someone is involved in a fatal accident and it’s found the Person in charge had “reckless conduct in respect of duty”, under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, there is up to 5 years imprisonment and/or a fine not exceeding $600,000 .

ASNZS 3760:2010 provides the procedure for the safety inspection and testing, and it states a “competently trained” person needs to perform this role. Instead of having to go through the hassle of having you or one of your staff doing the training, and purchasing the equipment, let us do it for you! Our staff are also currently licenced Electrical Worker (EASQ), so more than capable to thoroughly Inspect, Test, Tag, and even undertake minor repairs if required. That’s so much more convenient than a “competently trained” person telling you something needs a new plug or lead and leaving you to sort it yourself.

What needs to get tested?

Any “low voltage” (50Vac-1000Vac or 120Vdc-1500Vdc) appliance, single or multi-phase, connected by flexible cord or connecting device to electrical supply . This includes tagging with specific intervals of re-inspection and testing, as well as record keeping of 7 years.

Common examples of items included (but are not limited to): appliances with cord-sets, extension leads, multi socket power boxes, chargers and residual current devices (RCDs). Basically its 99% of the appliances that are plugged into a wall socket (not perfume or anti-bug scented items). An appliance with a removable plugged lead (like an IEC lead) is actually two separate items.

Any faulty equipment needs to be removed from service, tagged as “Do Not Use” and disposed of appropriately or repaired by a registered electrical worker (which we are).

What you can expect?

After getting in touch with us, we’ll get you to fill in your details, read our terms and conditions of trade, and sign on the dotted line before we start. We’ll arrange a time to come and bring our portable equipment to do any testing we need to do on site, as well as provide professional advice. The tests are ensuring the:

- For earthed appliances/leads (anything with the 3 pin plug) that the Earth Continuity between the plug and appliance or plug and socket is under 1 Ohm;
- And the Insulation Resistance between the live and earth wires are over 1 Million Ohms. OR that Current Leakage on any item is under 0.005 Ohms.

- That any guards, plastic mouldings etc. are “as manufactured” and in “safe working condition”.

If these are found to not be true for an item, that item is Unsafe and therefore Uncompliant to the NZ Safety Regulations and removed from use until repaired or it is disposed of. There is no blame you were using it, but we now need to replace or repair it. I carrying extension leads, multi socket power boards and replacement plugs in my van. If I am unable to repair it, I will assist you to get a quote from someone who can.

The items that pass the above mentioned tests, get a durable tag with the certification that it is safe, and a recommended re-inspection date according to AS/NZS 3760. Dates range from 3 months to 5 years, depending on what the item is, and where it’s used. i.e. Demolition/construction 3 months, commercial cleaning 6 months, shops up to 2 years, offices up to 5 years.

A report will then be emailed for your own record-keeping, along with the invoice. I will email and then call or visit close to when your re-inspections are required. I look forward to assisting you make your workplace a safer place.
