This season is under the microscope as the Government is pushing ahead with a Bill to propose stronger regulations on the country's indigenous fishery and possible regulation of whitebait fishing in public Conservation areas.

Timaru fisherman Braden Clarke said he's not opposed to sensible regulations - "you could have a license for whitebait fishing like you do for normal fishing."
