An update on weather, from Waikato District Council

Julie Kaio Reporter from Franklin County News

Work will continue today to re-open roads in the Waikato district, after extreme weather caused flooding and slips.

It is hoped that River Road, Tuakau, and the Tuakau Bridge-Port Waikato Road will be open to one lane later today however assessments are on-going. There are no concerns for the safety of people in the Port Waikato area or for the welfare of the children at the Port Waikato Camp.

People are advised that the Hakarimata track, and nearby tracks, are closed due to a slip and they should avoid the area.

Waitetuna Valley Road, Te Uku, is now open.

The following roads remain closed or partially closed due to flooding and/or slips
· Old Mountain Road, Raglan (at 6km mark)
· Waingaro Road, Ngaruawahia (currently open to one lane. Weather permitting)
· Rotowaro Road and Hangapipi Road, Huntly
· Highway 22 north of Glen Murray (at the 21.5km mark)
· Tuakau Bridge - Port Waikato Road, Te Kohanga
· Klondyke Road, Onewhero
· Allen and Eyre Road, Tuakau (one lane)
· Pheasant Close, Rotokauri (TBC)
· Ponganui Road, Onewhero (one lane)
· Pioneer Road, Pokeno
· River Road, Tuakau
· Te Hoe and Orini Road, Orini and Tenfoot Road, Taupiri
· Brien Road, Onewhero

Two welfare centres were set up yesterday but have since been closed as they weren’t required.

Teams will continue to monitor the river levels. Should water levels rise and threaten homes residents are urged to evacuate to higher ground and to notify us as soon as possible.

People are reminded to drive safely through flood waters and to avoid affected areas if possible. If you see flooding or storm damage please phone us on 0800 492 452. If life is in danger, always call 111.

Poll: Are Kiwis allergic to “exuberance”? 🥝

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

In The Post’s opinion piece on the developments set to open across Aotearoa in 2026, John Coop suggests that, as a nation, we’re “allergic to exuberance.”

We want to know: Are we really allergic to showing our excitement?

Is it time to lean into a more optimistic view of the place we call home? As big projects take shape and new opportunities emerge, perhaps it’s worth asking whether a little more confidence (and enthusiasm!) could do us some good.
