Hi neighbours,

Who's watching the Chiefs v Blues tonight? What's your prediction?

There'll be some passion in the match. As sports reporter Aaron Goile writes in a game preview here. "It might be a new year and they might have a new coach with a fresh approach, but the team admit they are still 'gutted' and 'hurt' by the defeat to their local rivals last year which snapped a competition-record unbeaten streak between two sides."

We know there will be more and would really like to be able to support them. Being for first time parents they only have one chance to attend these programmes. These parents want to be the best parents that they can be and we would like to assist them. Not only does the programme support their first baby but also any future children. We have trained facilitators to lead the groups but they need a support person with them. Ideally we do not like to have more than 15 new parents and babies in a group as this enables each person to receive the support and encouragement that they need. It is great for each of them to be able to share any issues for them and to know that they need. Both the facilitators and attendees really enjoy the sessions and get a lot out of it both the giver and the recipient. Main criteria to be involved is to like people and to want to be able to support others resulting in a stronger community.

Former pupils and staff who haven’t visited for some time will notice a lot of changes. The main classroom block still looks pretty much the same, but the staffroom and office are in different locations and the grounds have been beautifully landscaped, with colourful murals further enhancing the plantings. It has a lovely feel to it and if you have a few moments, it’s worth checking out the school’s website – www.pukekawa.school.nz....

These days there are around 110 pupils who go up to Year 6 (previously known as Standard 4). Back in 1957 the roll was around 130, but that included Forms 1 and 2, so it has remained pretty steady over the past 60 years.

On 17 October Pukekawa School will host a gathering to celebrate its 125th anniversary with a formal welcome and performances by today’s pupils, followed by an informal mix and mingle opportunity and photos taken. The annual Calf Club day will take place the day before. Anyone holding fond memories of training their own calf or lamb will be most welcome to attend.

For some photos and more news, visit pukekawareunion202.wixsite.com/reunion 2020. In the meantime, save the date - Saturday 17 October 2020 - and let others know about it.
