On Yolanda's birthday, her husband had a major heart attack. They had an entire day planned, but then life threw a spanner into the works.
Yolanda asked Amelie to feed her cat, Koda, but Amelie's family went over and above. They cooked dinners two nights in a row and sent yummy treats during the tough time.
“I was really touched by their love, prayers and generosity. They are amazing. I couldn’t wish for better neighbours,” said Yolanda.
Nominate a Nice Neighbour you know, and they could be recognized on Stuff (and you both win a prize!).

All that is worth saving
Prophet Song by Paul Lynch was announced winner of the Booker Prize 2023 at an awards ceremony held in London at 10am NZ Time.
Prophet Song was one of six finalists that also included Bee Sting by Paul Murray, Study for Obedience by Sarah Bernstein, If I survive you by Jonathan Escoffery, Western Lane by Chetna Maroo and The Other Eden by Paul Harding.
The novel by Lynch is set in Ireland and charts the impact of a right wing authoritarian government on the daily life of Eilish who, "finds herself caught within the nightmare logic of a collapsing society – assailed by unpredictable forces beyond her control and forced to do whatever it takes to keep her family together." [1]
After accepting the award Lynch said, "This was not an easy book to write. The rationale part of me believed I was dooming my career by writing the book but I had to write it anyway. We do not have a choice in such matters." [2]
He read a quote, "If you use what is within you, what is within you will save you. If you do not use what is within you, what is within you will destroy you. My writing has saved me."
Before announcing the winner 2023 Judges Chair Esi Edugyan said the jury looked for "something that startles, that shakes you from complacency."
"With its enormous impact on writers and readers The Booker Prize insists that books are lives, that the different worlds that they open us to are crucial for a sense of wholeness in our own."
"We sought a winning novel that would transport us.
We sought a winning novel that might speak to the immediate moment while also possessing the possibility of outlasting it."
"In these troubled times we sought a novel with a guiding vision. A book to remind us we are more than ourselves. To remind us of all that is worth saving," she said
Mirroring societal trends apocalyptic and dystopian scenarios were a feature of most of the books chosen as finalists. Scenarios across books included societal breakdowns to bunkers, "castaways - in flight from society and its judgment", "the intrusion of ‘civilization’ officials" to secret police targeting citizens. [3]
Dystopian scenarios begin to feel more fact than fiction as governments lurch to the right from Aotearoa (New Zealand) to the United Kingdom, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Argentina and Spain and the world watches the war in Ukraine and Syria. [4 and 5]
