There has been a spate of crime in Wainuiomata recently. A community meeting heard a plea to have police based permanently in the suburb.
Concerns about the rise of youth crime, gang violence and lack of police visibility were all aired.
The meeting heard from senior sergeant Brad Allen, who said gangs offered youth money, kudos and power.
“I think there’s always been a gang problem here...youth need something to do.”
