When you're in a heated argument with your partner, you might feel like you're ready to burst with frustration. But then your partner cracks an inside joke that makes you smile and laugh.

Suddenly you're not as frustrated. Boom, tension defused.

This is a classic "repair attempt" that we encourage couples to use regularly, and humour is one of the most common repairs that couples use when experiencing conflict.

In What Makes Love Last, Dr John Gottman claims that "well-timed repairs are part of the dance between two people who know and trust each other."

Here are some repair attempts that you can use if you are in a conflict with your partner and need an effective way to defuse tension:

Ask your partner, "What do you need?"
Express affection, physically or verbally.
Use humour (but avoid any humour that seems sarcastic or critical)
Take responsibility when appropriate
Understand by expressing empathy
Reinforce "we-ness" by complimenting your relationship overall

Using these kinds of repair attempts will shut down many confrontations and train you to be more aware of each other's needs. They aren't a quick fix to recurring problems, but repair attempts can prevent negative behaviour and feelings from overwhelming a relationship.

Does your loved one ride a motorcycle?

Riding a motorcycle or scooter inevitably carries more risk than driving a four-wheeled vehicle. And it turns out quite a lot of us have someone close to us who rides (in fact, 48% of Neighbourly members!)

If you worry about their safety, there is something you can do: encourage them to take Ride Forever coaching, provided (and heavily subsidised) by ACC. It's delivered by experts and it works, as Simon Gotlieb's story shows. Neighbourly members can book a FREE Ride Forever course before 31 March using promo code NEIGH18 over here.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR HUTT CITY RESIDENTS
RESIDENTIAL INTENSIFICATION FOR HUTT CITY -
HUTT City Council wants to approve the building of 3 Storey Apartments/Buildings in nine targeted areas in Lower Hutt. Once approved this could be become city wide.
Do you want a 3 Storey Building beside your single storey home one metre from your boundary on three sides of your property. This will cause loss of sunlight, dampness, cold homes, traffic congestion, devaluation of your home, loss of privacy and noise. We are not against intensification of our city with two storey buildings/apartments and granny flats etc, just 3 storey buildings and Councils plans are to have blocks and blocks of them. Areas targeted at the moment are Epuni, Waterloo, Wainuiomata, Alicetown, Waiwhetu/Woburn, Avalon/Park Ave, Naenae, Stokes Valley and Taita.
PLEASE SHARE WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY, THANKS
RESIDENTIAL INTENSIFICATION PLAN CHANGE 43.
10 METRE BUILDINGS ONE METRE FROM THE BOUNDARY!
PLEASE HAVE YOUR SAY ON WHAT HUTT CITY COUNCIL IS PROPOSING FOR OUR CITY!
