Light pollution is a worldwide problem, with the latest research showing impacts on human health & wildlife as well as masking our views of the universe we are part of.
We're in a period of rapid escalation of this issue, as we're changing the colour of light we're using as well as increasing the intensity of light pollution created.
In this talk Lee Mauger of the Martinborough Dark Sky Society will touch on the latest research on the impacts of light pollution and also talk about how the Wairarapa is looking to mitigate these problems through the creation of an International Dark Sky Reserve.
If the weather is clear we'll head outside after the talk and look through telescopes provided by the Wellington Astronomical Society. (Going by the forecast we might be trying out the telescopes indoors!)

I was crossing safely carrying my daughter, the truck with 2 men in it stopped and we waved to say thank you, I hadn’t seen a women sneaking up and quickly undertaking him. He spotted it and wedged his truck in front of her blocking her car with his truck. People I know you’re all in a rush in the morning but if traffic is stopped at a crossing please think before passing any other vehicle. If it hadn’t been for his keen observation skills and quick thinking myself or my daughter could of been road kill. Car vs pedestrians we would of stood no chance. I had waited till traffic stopped before crossing I hadn’t just stepped out into moving traffic this is beyond stupid what the woman did.

All that is left to do is for our team to lay gravel on the track. This work requires a helicopter and so the Mackenzie Track and the valley will be off limits to the public for the 3rd and 4th of April. This includes the Main Ridge Track from the Mackenzie Track down to Butterfly Creek and Kōwhai Track. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
