This vitally important research tells us that unless we improve our levees and seawalls in the near future. Hauraki Plains farms, Thames CBD and our coastal settlements, will without any doubt, be increasingly threatened by the now accelerating rate of sea level rise combined with our locally subsiding lands. Will we be the poster child of best defences or that of a miserly and cowardly retreat from the sea. I suspect other low lying regions of NZ will watch us with enormous interest.
Although I have been following the climate change science for decades; being a newcomer here, I was totally ignorant regarding the subsidence risks of our plains.

We want to know: Are we really allergic to showing our excitement?
Is it time to lean into a more optimistic view of the place we call home? As big projects take shape and new opportunities emerge, perhaps it’s worth asking whether a little more confidence (and enthusiasm!) could do us some good.

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
