Buller District rebels against costly combined West Coast council plan
A West Coast council is threatening to backtrack on a district plan it was forced to buy into and could cost ratepayers $6 million.
The Local Government Commission ordered the region's three district councils to create a combined plan, which sets out how natural and physical resources are used, developed and managed, that would be developed by the West Coast Regional Council.
The regional council is now asking ratepayers to pay $650,000 just for the first year of developing the plan – on top of $250,000 they would have already coughed up.
