Meth addicts swamping drug rehab facilities

Methamphetamine appears to be closing in on alcohol as the nation's most addictive substance.

Usage is so rampant that Waikato District Health Board workers say it has endangered the region's methadone programme and pushed rehab facilities to maximum capacity.

Today a large elm tree at the foot of Alma Street, near the Novotel Tainui Hotel, will see some temporary disruptions to traffic in central Hamilton.

Although at the foot of the street, it is feasible there may be delays to vehicles using Alma Street and those parking in the riverside carpark adjacent to Novotel and SkyCity.

The job will commence at 9am, and is expected to take most of the working day.

St John has always had a strong community presence in Hamilton which has recently increased thanks to the opening of a new opportunity shop in Frankton. The local community has rallied behind this venture, supporting it with donations and shop fittings.

Proceeds from items sold in the shop will be used to support St John emergency ambulance services and community programmes such as Health Shuttles, Caring Caller and St John Youth programmes. St John Opportunity Shop is currently recruiting volunteers and seeking donations of items that can be sold in the shop. Donations can be dropped off at 1 Rawhiti Street, Frankton.

I have joined forces with Hale Health on Higgins Rd in Dinsdale and they are holding a free night market this Saturday night for all to attend. Visit a variety of health professionals, grab a bite to eat/drink, keep the kids entertained, check out our gym, have a bit of a shop and more. Entry is FREE and this event has things for the whole family.

A few of the vendors you'll see are: Fuel Nutrition Ltd, Nourish POD, Nothing Naughty, Cafe2U New Zealand, Two Birds Threads, Kgs for the kids, Choice Rides and Inflatables, South Pacific Islands Institute - SPI! And that's not all of them.
