Hi Neighbours, here's where we are up to as we deal with the effects of the last few days' weather.
Monitoring overnight and this morning of the riverbank subsidence near our Eastern Bulk Main water pipes has been completed and shows an improved situation. The urgent stabilisation works we have been putting in place in recent weeks have proved effective at this stage despite the weather and high river levels. Further rain is forecast locally and in the Taupo catchment this afternoon, so we are maintaining our monitoring.
We are continuing to request that people conserve water just in case we have to shut down this main, and we thank the community for their efforts.
It is important to note that these precautions are all about potential disruption to supply of water, not about water quality. There are no issues with our water treatment plant or our ability to treat water. The issue is basically that if further subsidence affects the Eastern main we may have to supply the city from the Western Main only.
The heavy rain, coupled with soaked ground, created a number of wastewater overflows at sites throughout the city yesterday. As of this morning we are aware of 77 properties which have been affected and clean-up work is being organised. We understand people want this work done as quickly as possible but we simply can’t get people and equipment to everyone at the same time and ask for your patience while our crews get it sorted.

Hamilton asked to urgently conserve water

Hamiltonians are asked to conserve all non-essential water use after rising Waikato River levels may affect the stability of the slip-affected Eastern Bulk Water Main.

Hamilton City Council staff are monitoring the Eastern Bulk Water Main site and there is the possibility that we may isolate (shut down) the Eastern Bulk Water Main as a precautionary measure due to rising river levels.

City Waters Unit Manager Maire Porter says residents can assist by conserving water for at least the next three days.

“Conserving all non-essential water is the best way for us to be able to manage supplying the whole city through one bulk water main if we need to. Easy ways to save water are taking shorter showers, turn off the tap when you’re brushing your teeth and refraining from using sprinklers or any outdoor water use,” says Mrs Porter.

“If a planned isolation was implemented today, we believe the impact on the city’s supply overnight would likely be similar to the events of 3 February, when we had some pressure loss issues but no loss of service for households.

“Regular updates will be on the Council’s website and Facebook page, however it would help get the message out if people can let their friends and neighbours know.”

The Eastern Bulk Water Main supplies around 27,000 homes and runs under the Waikato River from the city’s water treatment plant opposite Hamilton Gardens. A substantial section of the riverbank collapsed around the Bulk Main in early February.

The isolation of the bulk main will ensure all water is safe and will minimize any impact on the wider community.

Hello everybody! We belong to the Parish of St Peter Chanel on the corner of Te Rapa and Vardon Roads and are asking for your help.
Our Bishop Steve Lowe proposes to close half of the Catholic churches in Hamilton (St Peter Chanel in Te Rapa, St Joseph in Clarkin Rd/Fairfield and St Matthews in Silverdale Rd/
Churches of all denominations are open to everyone/anyone who wish for a moment of peace and quiet, for reflection, comfort, rest or prayer sometimes in moments of great joy or others of sadness or worry. I myself have availed myself of the presence of a church (any church) when travelling for a moment of quiet reflection or prayer.
Bishop Lowe has asked for feedback before making his final decision.
Please take a few minutes to voice what it would mean to you for the Hamilton community to lose three of its churches. You can do so by email:
bishop@cdh.org.nz
Thank you for your help in saving these 3 churches.

This will mean that every avenue for revenue/expenses will be looked at to enable the remaining Gardens to be finished within a proper time frame. This will also mean that any indication of entry fees being charged will be thoroughly discussed and probably taken out to public consultation. So there is no need to panic everybody. She has had more people contact her on her Facebook page regarding this matter than there were people voting in the last local body elections. How strange is that? People don't vote to choose their representatives but they jump up and down when one of those people suggest an idea to charge for something!!! The old saying goes.........if you haven't voted - you have no right to complain....
How very true.... But I'm glad so many people reacted as I'm a passionate supporter/volunteer at the Gardens and its great to know they are so supported by everyone.
