Paws 4 Life Charitable Trust
Paws 4 Life will offer refuge to any animal in need, with an emphasis on companion animals. Predominantly, our work encompasses rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming cats and dogs. These are generally animals that have been abused or neglected, dumped or abandoned, or are stray. We also work towards the reduction of wild cat colonies in our community.
Recently, we have a noticed an increase in the number of elderly people requiring help with their pets as they move into care, and in the number of displaced and homeless families reaching out for help with their animals. These are some of the most vulnerable members of our doing their best to care for their four legged family members, and we support them in any way that we can.
2018 has seen Paws 4 Life say yes more often than not. We have taken in over 50 kittens and cats from one property in January and similar numbers of felines from other properties as well as the usual stray animals from individuals. The numbers are staggering and there is no other shelter stepping up to help. The animals need help, the people need help, our communities and environment need this to happen. We are doing the work that the Councils do not and the other known main shelter is not.
Every single animal is assessed, receives any veterinary care required – illnesses are treated, they are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, and if required, they receive specialist surgery such as eye removals, dentals or amputations before they are adopted. Any animals who have untreatable injuries or illnesses, or who are guaranteed to have a diminished quality of life are humanely euthanised.
Costs are recovered as much as is practical by way of adoption fees but our predominant revenue streams are generated via donations from our large base of supporters, and by fundraising. With that being said, given our increased workload in the past 12 months with as many as 500 animals in care at any one time, there has been little time available to dedicate to fundraising as the animals and the daily running of the organisation has had to take priority.
Paws 4 Life has proven to be a sustainable charitable trust over the past 9 years and it has also proven to be a much needed resource in the greater Waikato region. The animals in need are climbing and our resources are regularly tested, but if we do not keep up the level of work we are currently doing, the greater Waikato district will have an uncontrollable amount of animals breeding, lost, abandoned, injured, stray, and wild, becoming a major environmental issue and the current problem will escalate immensely.
In order for Paws 4 Life to remain functional in our community, we need help. Rachael and Jay are committed to working 7 days a week and managing all areas of Paws 4 Life, but we have simply outgrown our current facilities and are fast exhausting our current funds. We want to prove how hard we work, to prove what we do on a day to day basis and to be held accountable, but we need a helping hand. With fast diminishing funds the forecast is short – we have never been in this position before built with the increased need in the community we are about to get into serious financial difficulty to provide this service.

Some Choice News!
Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
