Saving Chateau Tongariro just got cheaper thanks to new earthquake strengthening rules that could slash millions from repair bills.
However, Ruapehu District mayor Weston Kirton, whose council has championed the saving of the iconic heritage hotel, is not getting too excited, saying earthquake strengthening costs were “another part of the puzzle, but a significant one”.
