Buller mayor believes handsaw used to damage Punakaiki water supply

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

A West Coast tourism hotspot’s water supply, which is subject to a dispute between the landowners and the local council, has been damaged in what appears to be a deliberate attack.

Buller mayor Jamie Cleine said the council was alerted to damaged pipes leading from the weir to the town’s treatment plant on Sunday.

Some water was still getting to the treatment plant and repairs would be carried out on Tuesday, he said.

The Buller District Council is seeking to compulsory purchase the land at Punakaiki where the township’s water supply has been drawn from since 1988.
