Greymouth CBD upgrade progressing, but lots more work to do

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

Greymouth has suffered as the mining industry declines, but life is slowly being breathed back into the West Coast town's centre.

Once home to 47 hotels, today the West Coast town has only six. Those entering the town are greeted by the large, derelict Revingtons Hotel with its crumbling facade on one side and a McDonald's restaurant on the other.

The town's centre contains multiple derelict buildings, many of which will not meet earthquake standards, according to its mayor. And some feel Greymouth is not tapping into the potential tourism market, with visitors driving through by the millions to stay in Hokitika or the glacier country further south.

But locals say it feels like the place is finally beginning to move forward, with some businesses thriving and new ones opening up.
