Who do you represent?
People ask me, "what is your policy on ...?" If they're looking for a spirited debate then my answer is probably a let down. I don't think it's appropriate that I should have any policies at all.
Under representative democracy my job is not to push my own view of the world, but rather to represent the views of the community that elected me. My job will be to engage with the community at large to become informed on what is important to them. That is the whole community, and not just those who I would naturally agree with.
That's a big ask and I will need assistance from the community to point out ways and means to reach people. I'm thinking of maybe booking a table at a local cafe, same place same time every week. Maybe move it around to different cafes to support local businesses. Reaching everyone may be unrealistic but it doesn't mean I shouldn't try.
If you are a group and you meet regularly then I'd be grateful for the opportunity to meet you. I can't promise a witty reparte but I will listen to your concerns. If you are an individual then I'd be happy to meet over a cuppa at a local cafe of your choice.
If I am elected to Council then I will, to the best of my abilty, represent the whole Carterton community.

This Friday is Pink Shirt Day, which began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying after a new student was harassed for wearing pink. People across the globe are now encouraged to wear pink on this day to take a stand against bullying and promote inclusivity.
