A Dunedin mayoral contender says he is not spending a cent on his campaign because "democracy is too precious to be treated as a commodity".
Jim O'Malley was elected to the Dunedin City Council three years ago and is now one of 14 candidates vying for the mayoral chains as incumbent Dave Cull steps down.
But what makes the sitting councillor's campaign different is that his face can't be found on the back of a bus, on a billboard, or on a flyer.
