Be protected against Mumps – vaccinate!
This year so far, Auckland has had over 150 cases of Mumps reported, compared to 35 for all of 2016. Mumps is a highly infectious viral disease, causing swelling of the salivary glands on one or both sides of the face. Most people recover, although in some rare cases there can be serious complications including permanent hearing loss and infertility. Mumps is preventable by two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination, which is given at 15 months and 4 years of age. If you’re not sure if you or your children are up-to-date with vaccinations, call your medical practice who will be able to assist you, or book you in for a free vaccination.
