Bill Sutton House, swathe of Christchurch river red zone, gifted to city
The historic Bill Sutton House, in the river red zone, has been gifted to Christchurch.
About 70 hectares of red zone land in the Christchurch suburbs of Brooklands, Southshore and South New Brighton were also transferred to city council ownership.
The land was passed over as part of the global settlement, wide-ranging agreement outlining the division of some earthquake recovery costs and responsibilities of the Christchurch City Council and the Crown. It was signed in September 2019.
Bill Sutton was a well-known New Zealand artist and his 1960s architecturally designed house in Templar St in Richmond has been extensively restored by the Crown. Sutton painted most of his celebrated works on the site. It will be set up as a museum.
