Hi neighbours, would you rather pay more rates or cut services?

City councillors are accusing Christchurch mayor Phil Mauger of paving the way for asset sales by making “dramatic” claims about the council’s dire finances.
They say cuts to core council services like libraries and swimming pools, as proposed by Mauger, were so unpalatable to the public they would never get through.

On Monday, Mauger said the council was in “shit creek financially” and cuts to libraries and swimming pools were on the cards to avoid an 18% rates increase next year.

We’re looking for the nicest neighbours in town, and Pam Driver of Burswood has shared her lovely neighbours, David and Lara Hurst, saying they “are just wonderful”.

This year, Pam had a missing cat, which was quite out of character. Driver let the Hursts know, and they joined the search, successfully locating him in the gap between the ceiling and roof of their neighbour’s house.

Pam said “They rescued him and brought him home to me... complete with some scratches! I hate to think what would have happened had he not been found”.

Pam nominated the Hursts to let them know she is thankful for them: “It’s so good to know I have such caring neighbours who have my back. Thank you neighbours!”

Nominate someone in your hood, and your special neighbour could feature on Stuff and Neighbourly as an inspiration to us all (plus there are prizes to be won!).

Christchurch could end up with six new faces in Parliament, depending which way special votes go.

Former television producer Reuben Davidson, small business owner Laura Trask, freshwater ecologist Lan Pham and health researcher Hamish Campbell have all made it as either electorate or list MPs, and they all have Christchurch top of mind.

You could also add a doctor to the list if National’s Vanessa Weenink manages to hold on to her majority in Banks Peninsula after the special votes are counted.

Kahurangi Carter, the Green Party’s candidate for Christchurch Central, is another waiting on the results of the specials to confirm her place.
